Salt Water / Mineral Water

Chlorination for Swimming Pools

A Salt Water / Mineral Swimming Pool Chlorinator is made up of two components.

  • The Chlorinator Control Unit.

  • The Cell Electrode.

What is Salt / Mineral Water Chlorination

As the dissolved minerals (salt or other) in the water passes over the electrolytic cell, the process of electrolysis converts mineral chloride ions into sodium hypochlorite (liquid chlorine).

The advantages of mineral salts in swimming pools, apart from the sanitising effect are the pleasantness of the water, lack of red eyes from prolonged bathing, convenience and safety, lower chemical costs and the fact that asthma and hayfever sufferers can now swim in and under water without adverse symptoms.

What is the difference between Salt Water Chlorination & Mineral Water Chlorination ?

Salt Water Chlorination uses normal Sodium Chloride (Salt)

Mineral Water Chlorination uses a combination of Magnesium Chloride & Potassium Chloride.

Whether Sodium Chloride (salt), Magnesium Chloride, Potassium Chloride or a combination of all three are use, all are equally efficient in allowing the chlorinator to produce Sodium Hypochlorite (Liquid Chlorine) for your pool or spa.

Swimming or Bathing in the mineral blend mix of Magnesium or Potassium has the added health benefits the body absorbing these minerals.

Installation

The  cell electrode is installed into the return to pool pipework, after the filter, heater and pressure pool cleaner line; and the power pack is mounted in close proximity to the cell.

A mineral blend mix or salt is added to the pool water, at a rate of about 4 kilograms for every 1 000 litres of water (4000ppm or 4000 parts per million).

This salinity level is ~1/9th the strength of sea water, and is so mild it is actually pleasant to taste.

Minerals or Salt needs to be replaced only when water is lost through overflowing or flooding. Evaporation of water will only concentrate the salt or mineral level and will be diluted again when the pool level is topped up

Typical Installation Diagram

Salt / Mineral Water Swimming Pool Chlorination is suitable for both domestic & commercial applications and is the preferred method of swimming pool sanitation.

Salt / Mineral water swimming pool chlorination eliminates the need to manually dose the pool with sanitation products, that are expensive & dangerous to handle and store.

The pool water is far more pleasant to swim in, with silky like feel that does not irritate the skin or eyes.
